So a while back in March I went to Lisbon with a UWE crew (posse? murder? gaggle?) of animators on a noble quest to broaden our horizons at the Monstra Animated Film Festival ( http://www.monstrafestival.com/index.php/pt/ ). Jollily we jaunted for 5 days in the sun fuelled by a mixture of European festival-going suaveness and beer at 99c for a litre, taking in the best that Monstra and Lisbon has to offer. Here are some photos and drawings for your delectation and delight as a record of our trip.
This is some of the content from my action analysis module showing my working process. I've tried to illustrate how I arrived at my final animations through first-hand research photographing and videoing the actions I was trying to replicate, sketching them and putting these sketches into storyboards to help me better understand the motion and timing of the action.
For this exercise we had to work in pairs and use the characters which we had created in our design for animation module. I worked with Emma Shepherd and below are the two characters we were using.
Once we had these I set to work designing a layout. We decided on a kitchen setting ass this is where we thought the two could feasibly meet. I first drew the layout and then digitally drew it in flash.
We then set to work thinking of a premise for their 15 second conversation. We wanted it to be something strange and complicated and then for something surprising to happen at the end. We chose a clip from a BBC Radio 4 science program which was two men discussing the nature of human actions within the context of the universe. In these two videos we read the lines at the approximate speed as the recording we had in order to study the lip movements to see how the characters should actually move to create these sounds.
Then we analysed these movements and made rough dope sheets of how the characters mouths would move.
And then we put all that we had learned into practice and here is the final product.
